Galaxies
by members of the Wells & Mendip Astronomers
Galaxies like our own Milky Way are gravitationally bound systems of stars, gas, dust and dark matter. They are classified by their shape as spiral, elliptical or irregular and they fill the observable Universe in every direction, in groups, clusters and long filaments. They make beautiful but often challenging targets for astrophotographers. Occasionally a supernova explodes in the galaxy producing a new star that, despite its great distance, is for a few weeks as bright as the curtain of foreground stars from our own Milky Way.
