M5 and HRD diagram Mike Cranfield |
The HRD Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram plots brightness (adjusted for distance) against temperature (or colour, which can be a good proxy) to bring order to the apparent chaos of stars in the sky. Most stars fall along a single line depending on their mass, the so-called main sequence, running from the most massive in the top left to the smallest in the bottom right. Near the end of their lives they expand into giants and move off the main sequence, the most massive stars first. This main sequence turn-off can be seen in the HRD for stars in a single cluster, allowing the age of the cluster to be estimated.
